A THREAD BASED VISION

Perhaps, when looking at the works of Livia Sciorilli Borrelli, dwelling on the reasons behind her use of weaving might prove misleading, or at least beside the point.

In truth, her works are first and foremost art.

As the eye moves across majestic expanses or the smallest fragments of fabric, which the artist creates through painstaking crochet work, the “medium” of that dense weave is almost immediately forgotten. Instead, we are swiftly drawn towards her.

Towards her choices and her spontaneity.
Towards her pauses and her accelerations.

The absolute silence of infinity, enclosed within a majestic field of anthracite grey, is suddenly crossed, challenged by the persistence of a red line, doubled, sharp and assertive. Together, these elements become both an echo and a complete synthesis of the struggle of living. So perfect, in fact, that the result is no longer unsettling but, on the contrary, deeply calming.

The overflowing expressiveness of the rich, complex and labyrinthine weaves in which this artist’s work becomes entangled finds its narrative strategy in the explosive power of colour, while the marks accompanying it provide its distinctive accent.

Discovering Livia’s work was truly a rare experience. It seemed almost as though it had been waiting to speak not only to her any longer.

It was a privilege to be the first to introduce it, allowing others to appreciate the spontaneous and mysterious truth that, for those willing to see it, it reveals through its inexhaustible weaves.
